Helen McCusker
We spoke with Faithfull girl and Artist, Helen McCusker to explore her style of art, where and how she sources her inspiration and the most memorable vacation she’s ever taken.
“Please introduce yourself”
Hi, my name is Helen McCusker. I’m a semi-retired model (ha!) and an aspiring painter.
“Your artworks tend to feature bold colours, abstract shapes and elements of still life. How would you personally describe your style of work? ”
It tends to oscillate between figurative and abstract. The figurative usually portrays scenes of indulgence or intimacy, with a hint of humour. Where the abstract stuff is concerned I like to focus on capturing a fleeting feeling, a burst of joy, a quiet moment — hopefully, something to meditate on and take your mind off other things.
“Who, where or what inspires you the most? ”
Outsider artists such as Mary T Smith whose creative endeavour never ceased despite oppression and hardship. Time spent in nature. Reading. Personal relationships.
“When you are not working or painting you are: ”
Now that we can move around a bit more — walking in Scotland, bouncing around London, travelling to see family in Ireland.
“Three words to describe your personal style would be”
casual, comfortable, blue.
“Name your most memorable vacation, where it was and why it was so special:”
Mexico City, the colours the food the attitude, the symbiosis of concrete and nature.
“Somewhere you have never been but would love to go:”
Nepal.
