“Vianca, please introduce yourself and your project, Unna.”

"I’m Vianca Soleil Roquero, interior designer and founder of Unna. Sometimes I do other creative work such as photography and art direction. About a year ago, I moved to a secluded island in Romblon, Philippines to build Unna, our beach home. We’re currently turning it into an eco-resort with the goal of supporting our community and sharing to others our Filipino island way of life."

“We’ve been following your build for ‘Unna’ for sometime now, tell us more about the inspiration and path that lead you here.”

"I grew up in the city and have always longed to move by the sea. Then followed this idea to do it in a small hut in a small island. I did both the architecture and interior design of Unna. It’s inspired by the island itself - slow build, modest structure and nature-centered."

“You blend nature and architecture so beautifully, where did this vision grow from?”

"From my attempt to simplify things, both in my way of living and approach in design. I tried to unlearn design rules which I was used to back in the city and create with a fresher and uncomplicated eye."

“What is your favourite aspect about living life on an island full-time?”

"There’s so much I appreciate about Romblon and until now, it still feels like I’m settling in. There’s more to be learned and discovered and I find that to be the most exciting aspect. I have yet to learn driving a motorboat and make a trip up north to free dive the blue hole!"

“If you had to choose one design element from Unna, which is your favourite and why?”

"There’s a triangular islet nearby which has become symbolic to us because the property’s shape is similar. This somehow became my guide in designing. Hence, the triangular roofs and basic shapes."

“What is next for you and Unna?”

"I’ll still be on the island working with the locals. We’re finishing marble pieces and building a library hut next. Once the pandemic settles and there are no more restrictions, we’d love for you to come visit us!"
