The Koufonisia Travel Guide With Holly Chippindale

With glittering turquoise waters and Cycladic architecture, Koufonisia is a small Greek island, perched between Naxos and Amorgos, underpinned by a relaxed off-the-grid atmosphere. If searching for a few days of reprieve, there may be no better spot to visit. Below, discover a travel guide, as curated by #FAITHFULLGirl and photographer Holly Chippindale.

How to access the island

The easiest way to reach Koufonisia is by flying from Athens to Naxos, then taking a short ferry. Seajets is the faster option but pricier, with Club or Platinum seating highly recommended for comfort. The slower ferry takes 2.5 hours but is more affordable and offers a scenic tour across the smaller cyclades.

Where to stay

Christina’s House

A sweet, family-run guesthouse set on land passed down through their family. It’s cosy, authentic and perfectly placed for exploring the village by foot. A warm, welcoming stay that feels like home.

For beachfront options, Windmill Villa and Palio Karnagio are wonderful choices. Hotel Atlantida has a pool and great views, while Utopia and Pangaia Suites are adults-only retreats with excellent locations. Sohoro is ideal if you prefer self-catering.

Where to wine and dine

For breakfast

Don’t miss Koufonisia Bakery – perfect for morning coffee, bagels, and their famous Orange Cake (the island’s best dessert in my opinion).

In Chora

Melissa is a must for traditional Greek dishes, recommended by our hotel.

By the port

Captain Nikolas Taverna by the port offers fresh seafood, while Kalofego at Pori Beach is great for lobster pasta and natural wines. Lavanda e Rosmarino serves authentic Italian fare.

For the perfect sunset

For sunset cocktails that can lead into a late note, Sorokos is the best spot.

Where to swim

Ammos Beach

This is the main sandy beach near Chora, ideal for calm, family-friendly swimming.

Ludiko Beach

A serene cove, perfect for peaceful swims and sunsets.

Pori Beach

This spot offers crystal-clear waters and snorkeling opportunities, accessible by a short ride.

Finikas Beach

This beach and its nearby coves are tranquil and easily walkable from the port – perfect for discovering your own quiet spot.

Where to shop

Koufonisia’s style is casual chic with island-inspired linen clothing, handmade sandals, and unique local designs. Galleria Spigolo blends Italian elegance with Greek island charm, and summer pop-ups offer even more distinctive pieces. Spend your days enjoying the sea, and your evenings exploring Chora’s vibrant shops when the town comes to life.
